Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change my address/phone number/email?
- To change your address, complete the change of address form (R2 Student Address Update) in PowerSchool. You can upload your proof of residence into PowerSchool or email it to your building secretary. Please note: address changes cannot be processed without proof of residence.
- To change your phone number and/or email, complete the contacts form (R3 Student Contacts Update) in PowerSchool.
What is my student's PowerSchool ID?
- Starting with Fall 2023, parents and guardians can see their students' Student Number (PowerSchool ID) by logging into the desktop version of PowerSchool. (Sorry, this isn't available in the PS mobile app yet). Here is where you will find it once you log in:
- The student's powerschool ID number is used for lunch accounts and other registrations.
- If you haven't yet set up parent access to PowerSchool, contact your school office for assistance.
How do I sign up for emails from my student's teacher/the principal/the district?
- Dexter Community Schools uses a mass-messaging platform that draws information from our PowerSchool to reach families via phone, text, email, and our mobile app. At the beginning of the school year, all families are required to review their student information, including phone numbers and emails, in the Back-to-School Annual Forms. If you have a change mid-year, contact your school office as noted above. The mailing lists for classes, buildings, and the District are automated. Staff create groups each year or semester for specials and extracurricular groups, so contact the specials teacher or program coordinator if you aren't receiving those a few weeks after school starts (it takes a while to set them up). Effective October-November 2023, we are switching to a provider that will allow parents to unsubscribe from selected message lists. We will send out a notification and directions when this is in place.
CAN GRANDPARENTS, ETC. SIGN UP FOR EMAILS?
We recommend that interested non-family parties use the Dexter Schools Mobile App to keep upon school goings-on.
What SHOULD I do if I am not receiving messages?

PowerSchool
PowerSchool
Dexter Community Schools use PowerSchool to manage student records. Parents and students can login and view class assignments, grades, etc. by going to this link: PowerSchool Login. You will need your student's ID, which you can obtain from the school office. Parents are also assigned a login by the school; the building secretary can help you with those numbers.
- Please note: PowerSchool is not available year-round for parent access. During the summer, we have a maintenance period and in August, it is unavailable until the new school year has been activated.
- Parents can set up notifications for grades, missing assignments, etc. by making those selections when logged in to PowerSchool.
- Parents can now submit updates to contact information in their student's PowerSchool record, including change of address, contact information, emergency contacts, health updates, and more. Directions for using PowerSchool forms are here.
PLEASE NOTE: The PowerSchool Parent Portal is a WINDOW into your child's record, but is not the student's official record. For your convenience, parents can submit updates using the Update Student Information Forms, but these must be processed by staff. Changing the email associated with your parent portal account does not update the email attached to your student.
PowerSchool Mobile App
The PowerSchool Mobile app gives parents and students access to real-time information on grades, attendance, assignments, scores, and comments. With a clean, easy-to-use interface and intuitive design, the app allows parents to monitor their child's proficiency on standards and register to receive immediate alerts specific to their child. The Dexter Schools district code is FZWJ. Keep reading for more help getting set up, if needed.

Care Solace – Mental Health Services Coordination
When you or your child needs help, it’s hard to know where to turn. In an effort to ease the burden of finding the mental health and substance use services you need, DCS has partnered with Care Solace, a confidential care hub.
With a network of over 350,000 providers and services, Care Solace will help you find the right help at the right time, 24/7/365, at no cost to you. They will connect you with providers accepting all medical insurances, including Medicaid, Medicare, and sliding scale options for those without insurance.
You can access Care Solace services in three ways:
- Call 888-515-0595 at any time. Multilingual support is available 24/7/365. A dedicated Care Companion will help you every step of the way to research options, secure appointments, and follow up to make sure it is a good fit.
- Search anonymously to get matched with an extensive list of care providers at caresolace.com/dcs.
- Contact your school health professional, and they will submit a referral on your behalf.
No matter what you're experiencing, there is hope and help. We are confident that our new partnership with Care Solace will help us build a healthier, more vibrant school community.
If you have a life-threatening emergency, please call 9-1-1 or The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 9-8-8. Care Solace is not an emergency response service or mental health services provider.
Please note: Information on individual treatment providers was gathered by Care Solace based on criteria such as geographic proximity, whether the provider accepts the authorized user’s insurance, and whether the provider is accepting new patients. The school district does not recommend, endorse, promote, or refer to any of the individual treatment providers.Withdraw a Student from DCS

Attendance
How do I report my student's absence?
- Call the school office at 734-424-4160 option 1
- Make sure to include the name of the student, the teacher, the reason and the date.
- It is helpful to email the teacher in case of missed work.
Do I need to call in my student if they will be late?
- Please call in your student if they will be coming in late. If they will only be a few minutes late, you do not need to call. If they are going to be 15 minutes or more late, please call the office.
Beginning/End of day plans
What do I need to do to pick up my student early?
- If your student already knows they are leaving early, make sure they bring the office a note. When you get here, call the office or come to the front door and we will send your student out.
- If your student does not already know they are leaving, please call the office at least an hour before you are coming to get them. This allows us time to find the student to get them a note to come to the office.
Where do I go to pick up my student for early dismissal?
- You may park in the front drive to pick up your student early if it is between 8am and 2:45pm.
Where do I go to pick up or drop off my student at the beginning or end of day?
- If you are dropping off your student at 7:30-8:00 am or picking up between 2:52-3:30pm, please only use the parking lot by Al Ritt Field. We have a system in place for dropping off and picking up students. The front drive is reserved for buses at those times.
- If you are going to be dropping off before 7:30am or picking up after 3:10pm, we will not have supervision for your student. The only time there is an exception is if they have a meeting with a teacher before or after school. If you are later than 3:10pm your student should be in the front office waiting for you. You can pull in the front drive as long as there are no buses present to pick them up at this time.
How do I let the school know of changes to end of day plans?
- If possible, please call for any changes to end of day plans at least one hour before the end of the day. This will allow us time to find the student to get them a note.
Medications
What do I do if my student needs medication during the school day?
- Use this form: Parent's Request for Administration of Medication at School
- This form and the medication should be brought to the office by the parent.
- Most medical questions can be answered on the District Nurse page. Feel free to reach out to the office secretaries with any questions.
Cell Phones/Deliveries/Lost and Found
Cellphone Policy:
Phones should be off and away during school hours. Student should ask their teacher for permission to come to the office to call home.
Item drop off:
If your student forgets an item (lunch, gym clothes, water bottles, instruments etc.), we have a table right inside the front door you can leave the item on. Please make sure all items are labeled with the students name.
Lost and Found
We understand students misplace items. We do have a lost and found table. Please encourage your student to review the items on that table often. We do donate anything left over at the end of the school year.
Technology
Who do I contact with technology questions?
- If your student has issues with their chrome book, they can bring it to the technology office here in the Creekside building.
- If you need to direct help: Parent/Student Tech Help Request
What do I do if I do not know my (student or parent) Powerschool login?
- Contact the office secretaries and we can get you that information. We can always reset your password if you have forgotten it.
- If there are glitches or problems we can work with our student information systems specialist to fix it.
How do I check my students grades?
- Student grades can be seen on the Powerschool website (all students) or the Summit Platform (for Summit students only).
- To get to powerschool: Powerschool Parent Login
- If you do not know your login, see above on how to get it.
Transportation
What bus does my student need to take?
- Please contact Transportation if you have any questions regarding your student's route: 734-424-4190
Where do I go to set up transportation for my student?
- Go to this link: Transportation page and click on "Transportation plans"
Walking Plans
Does my student have to have a walking plan to walk to and/or from school?

- Here is the walking plan.
